UAE Asian Cup Is Coming!
The 17th Asian Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from January 5th to February 1st. UAE, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Thailand have applied for the bid to host the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. As a result of competition, the Asian Football Confederation(AFC) chose the UAE as the host country. From the event, participating countries have expanded from 16 to 24. The winning team will be entitled to play as an Asian representative in the 2021 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Why Australia is participating in Asian Cup?
Australia cannot go straight to the FIFA World Cup even if it wins the regional qualifiers for the Oceania Football Confederation(OFC). The top spot in the regional qualifiers for Oceania had to play off with fifth place in the regional qualifiers for the South American Football Federation. As Australia has repeatedly failed to advance to this stage, it has moved to the AFC in January 2016.

According to AFC, the mascots were chosen for embodying the undeniable passion for football that exists in the UAE and across the Continent as well as the strong connection with the country’s culture.
His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, Tournament Director of the Local Organizing Committee, announced his pleasure at unveiling the official mascots for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 at the final draw ceremony “Mansour, like millions of children and teenagers around the Continent, shares a lifelong dream to represent his country on Asia’s ultimate stage. He possesses an unrivalled fervor for the game represented across the five AFC zones in the competition.
Sharing aspirations to don his nation’s colors in the Continent’s most prestigious competition, he will fulfil his dream by partnering with Jarrah to cheer on both players and spectators during the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 and will play an important role in bringing to life the tournament’s slogan” – “Bringing Asia Together.”
Unlike the last competition, there are two mascots for this competition. This will serve as a better factor for spectators to enjoy the competition.
So far, Japan has won the Asian Cup four times. Following that, Iran and Saudi Arabia won three championships and South Korea won two. According to FIFA rankings, Iran(30th), Australia(42nd), Japan(50th) and South Korea(52nd) are likely to win the championship (As of October 25, 2018). Unlike FIFA rankings, according to BetBrain, the betting company, Japan, which is 3rd in Asia, had the lowest dividend rate of 5 times, followed by Iran 5.5 times, South Korea 6.25 times, and Australia 6.75 times. The host country of UAE received a dividend of 8.5 times the fifth lowest (As of November 20, 2018). This shows that FIFA rankings are not an absolute factor in winning. As club games are still in progress, countries should pay attention to injuries to the players.
