Warning: Fake News

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy over fake news. Fake news intentionally disseminates fake information for political and economic benefits. A characteristic of recent fake news is that global IT companies are at the center of the controversy. Fake news no longer spreads through agitation or word of mouth. They appear with the face of a 'a formal article' on a media platform that is easily used by anyone. Citizens who have come across fake news can easily feel anxious and cause another damage by secondary processing of false information.

In addition to fake news made by global IT companies, the development of personal streaming services and OTT channels has led to indiscriminate production of fake news on personal channels, and the increase in the number of OTT service users has led to indiscriminate consumption of fake news produced by individuals.

In some cases, groundless remarks by celebrities are produced as fake news. The spread of the Covid-19 around the world is amplifying the anxiety of citizens around the world. In the meantime, President Trump's remarks that he was taking hydroxychloroquine, a Malaria treatment, quickly spread to fake news, creating some citizens taking hydroxychloroquine. President Trump's careless remarks have spread to fake news at a time when no treatment has been developed.

Fake news is also troubled in Korea. Recently, fake news about North Korean President Kim Jong-un spread indiscriminately. As President Kim Jong Un has not been seen in public for a long time, some South Korean general programming channels reported fake news. The news of President Kim Jong-un's death was also corrected by North Korea, but the media that reported fake news constantly denied it and did not stop reporting fake news. As a result, the tension between South and North Korea has been prolonged, and the anxiety among citizens has been amplified.

Experts argued that fake news could harm democracy, amplify social unrest, and be used for dictatorship if it continues to become extreme. National sanctions on fake news are necessary, but the view of citizens who are exposed to fake news is also important. Students from Kangwon National University and other news inmates must check the source of the news and make sure that the information is correct or not, and pay special attention not to reproduce it recklessly.
