TOPIK Speaking: How to prepare?
As Korean language proficiency becomes increasingly important for international students living and studying in Korea, the TOPIK Speaking Test has emerged as a new and valuable challenge. Introduced recently to evaluate practical speaking skills in real-life scenarios, the speaking section of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) now offers learners the chance to showcase their spoken fluency and communicative competence. However, because the speaking test is still new to many, students are often unsure about how to register, what to expect, and how best to prepare.
Application Process: What to Know
Registration for the TOPIK Speaking Test is handled online via the official TOPIK website. As the test is currently available only at selected locations, it is important to check test schedules and venue availability early. Applicants must submit basic documents such as a valid passport or alien registration card, along with a recent photograph. The application fee is approximately 80,000 KRW.

After completing the application, candidates receive a confirmation email that includes the test schedule, venue address, and other key instructions. Applicants are advised to download and print their test admission slip ahead of time and double-check the testing location to avoid last-minute confusion.
On the Day of the Exam
On test day, candidates are required to bring their photo identification and admission slip. The exam is conducted individually using a computer equipped with a headset and microphone. There are no live interviewers present, and all responses are recorded.
The test is divided into four sections that simulate real-life speaking tasks. These include describing pictures, expressing opinions, and responding to given situations. The total duration of the test is approximately 30 minutes, during which clarity, fluency, and vocabulary usage are key scoring elements. The testing environment is very structured, but the one-on-one format may be unfamiliar to some examinees. As such, being mentally prepared for this format can help reduce anxiety.
Preparation Tips and Resources
Effective preparation is crucial for success in the speaking section. Experts and experienced learners recommend daily speaking practice, even in short sessions. Activities such as self-recording, practicing common topics, or engaging in mock tests under timed conditions can be highly beneficial.
Various resources can help learners improve their speaking skills. YouTube channels like TOPIK Master offer test walkthroughs, and Korean-speaking clubs or meetups provide a relaxed space for conversation. Rather than over-memorizing answers, learners are encouraged to develop natural fluency, and accurate pronunciation which are skills that are more valued in the actual test.
Why Speaking Is Worth the Challenge
Although the TOPIK Speaking Test may seem intimidating, many learners find the experience rewarding. It not only strengthens language skills but also builds confidence in academic, professional, and everyday settings. By encouraging real-life communication over textbook memorization, the test helps students engage more fully in Korean society, whether in class, work, or daily life.
