Small Mistakes, Huge Failures: Hidden Risks of Unit Error
Units are just as important as numbers. In an era when one number moves billions, we sometimes emphasize only the ‘accuracy of numbers’. But what units these numbers were calculated in is often overlooked. When a unit is wrong, even a tiny mistake can lead to massive failure
What is a unit accident?
A unit error is a mistake that occurs in the process of unit conversion or unit matching of numbers, leading to an accident that can threaten the entire system. Although it may seem like a simple mistake, the result is fatal.

A case in point is NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter (1999). NASA used the metric system, while the Lockheed Martin Corporation provided the data to the American system. This minor discrepancy resulted in the loss of a $125 million Mars orbiter.
Korea Case: Korean Air Flight 6316
Unit accidents can lead to fatal accidents even in the sky. On April 15, 1999, Korean Air cargo flight 6316 crashed shortly after takeoff from Shanghai
Hongqiao International Airport, killing three passengers and five others on the ground. The cause of the accident was a misunderstanding at an altitude level.
The control tower instructed the pilots to ‘climb to 900 meters’, but the pilots misunderstood it as ‘900 feet’. In fact, the aircraft crashed into a nearby construction site after a sharp drop, operating to lower the altitude, despite having to go higher.
Example of a Unit Accident in Daily Life
Unit accidents are not limited to the field of science and technology. Similar accidents occur everywhere in our daily lives.
1. Drug Dose Mistake: There are frequent cases worldwide that confuse ‘mg (milligram)’ and ‘mL (milliliter)’ leading to overdoses.
2. Cooking Recipe Error: When following foreign recipes, it is common to misinterpret the unit of ‘cup’ as ‘gram’ and change the taste significantly.
3. International transportation and delivery problems: The confusion of weight unit (lb vs kg) or volume unit (ft³ vs m³) causes inconvenience such as delivery delay and additional charges.
How can I prevent it?
The key to preventing unit accidents is ‘standardization and communication’. Units must be attached to all figures and the notation system should be consistent. Unit verification procedures must be included in the communication process.
A small mistake can always be a fatal failure. When dealing with numbers, we emphasize accuracy, but the unit agreement that makes that accuracy possible is easily overlooked. The unit is not a choice, but a responsibility.
