Kangwon National University Holds Vision Declaration Ceremony for Korea’s First “One Province, One National University” Model

Kangwon National University successfully held the “Kangwon National University Integration Vision Declaration Ceremony” on April 30 at Baengnyeong Art Center on the Chuncheon Campus to commemorate the launch of Korea’s first “One Province, One National University” model.

The ceremony was organized to officially announce the vision and future direction of the newly integrated Kangwon National University following its merger with Gangneung-Wonju National University.

Approximately 1,000 guests attended the event, including Kangwon National University President Jung Jae-yeon, Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon State, National Assembly members Han Ki-ho and Heo Young, Vice Minister of Education Choi Eun-ok, former Kangwon National University presidents Ha Seo-hyun, Shin Seung-ho, and Kim Heon-young, Kangwon National University Alumni Association President Shin Heung-ju, Development Support Foundation Chair Lee Hwang-il, and other distinguished guests and university members.

The ceremony began with a congratulatory performance by students from the Department of Dance and continued with a progress report by Vice President for Innovation Strategy Jung Jin-geun, a commemorative speech by President Jung Jae-yeon, congratulatory remarks from distinguished guests, a screening of a promotional video titled “AI Innovation University in Partnership with AWS,” an agreement exchange ceremony for integration implementation, a vision declaration ceremony, and the singing of the university anthem.

During the agreement exchange ceremony, the university and the Ministry of Education confirmed an integration implementation agreement that will remain in effect for four years beginning on April 1. Under the agreement, both parties agreed to cooperate in strengthening the university’s overall competitiveness by reallocating resources to regional and institutional strengths, promoting specialization, and securing the financial support necessary to create an integrated educational environment.

The vision declaration ceremony was attended by President Jung Jae-yeon, Chuncheon Campus President Lim Eui-young, Gangneung Campus President Park Deok-young, Samcheok Campus President Park Cheol-woo, and Wonju Campus President Choi Hye-jin, who reaffirmed their commitment to unity and shared growth.

In his commemorative address, President Jung presented five core commitments for the future of Kangwon National University: successfully establishing the “One Province, One National University” integration model; realizing student-centered future education and fostering AX talent in the era of AI transformation; advancing into a world-class research university; leading regional-industry-academia co-growth as a unified national university; and becoming a globally connected top-100 university.

Jung emphasized the university’s responsibility as a national flagship university, stating, “We must respect the unique characteristics of each campus while creating greater synergy under the single name of Kangwon National University.” He added, “Rather than fearing change, we will move forward with expectations for a new future and take the lead in becoming a university recognized by the world.”
